“Managing Our Most Precious Resource: Burnout Dissatisfaction and the Future of Our Profession,” Graham Mcmahon, MD, MMsc, in NEJM
The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) recently published “Managing Our Most Precious Resource: Burnout Dissatisfaction and the Future of our Profession,” an editorial by ACCME President and CEO, Graham T. McMahon, MD, MMSc, in response to a recent iCOMPARE (Individualized Comparative Effectiveness of Models Optimizing Patient Safety and Resident Education) trial showing high rates of resident burnout.
In the editorial, Dr. McMahon observes that many residents and physicians today are focused on surviving rather than thriving, stating, “With increasing commoditization, commercialization, productivity targets, and administrative burdens, the volunteerism and soul that have typified our profession for generations are suffering.”
Health system and education leaders need to, “hear the sentinel plea of residents to reform our clinical learning environments to prioritize people,” concludes Dr. McMahon.
