ACCME PROPOSES CURRICULUM FOR ONBOARDING INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATES

International medical graduates (IMGs) are vital in the U.S. healthcare system, especially in addressing workforce shortages in rural and underserved communities. To support emerging licensing pathways for IMGs who have completed their training abroad but have not completed any training in the United States, the ACCME has developed a draft curriculum framework designed to help these physicians successfully transition into U.S. practice.

The curriculum has been submitted to the Advisory Commission on Additional Licensing Models, co-chaired by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and Intealth™ (which oversees the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates – ECFMG). The Commission, established in December 2023, was in response to legislative efforts to expand licensure pathways for IMGs who have not completed U.S.-based graduate medical education.

The proposed curriculum provides a standardized, scalable structure to guide accredited organizations in creating educational programs that support IMGs adapting to U.S. medical practice’s cultural, professional, and procedural expectations. Key topics include ethics, professionalism, communication and teamwork, electronic medical records, prescribing practices, and documentation.

Let us know at info@accme.org if you have suitable modules and educational components for parts of this curriculum that ACCME can compile into a list.

ACCME ACHIEVES WFME RECOGNITION

The World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) has launched its CPD Recognition Programme, a significant step forward in strengthening the global quality of continuing professional development (CPD) for healthcare professionals. ACCME is among the first four accrediting bodies to receive WFME Recognition. They include:

  • Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME)
  • European Board for Accreditation of Continuing Education for Health Professionals (EBAC)
  • Accreditation Section of the Department of Healthcare Professions, Qatar Ministry of Public Health
  • Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada

WFME Recognition signifies that these organizations meet globally accepted standards for CPD accreditation, ensuring that the education they accredit supports high-quality lifelong learning for healthcare professionals.

Encouraging Broad Recognition
Licensing and regulatory authorities should consider recognizing CPD credits from WFME-recognized accrediting bodies to streamline re-licensure and support a global approach to lifelong learning.
